IP valuation models come up frequently in the context of IP licensing programs, due diligence, venture capital investment, initial public offerings (IPOs), and IP asset sales/liquidations. Three primary economic valuation models (cost valuation; market valuation; and income valuation) may be utilized to assign a value to any asset. However, in the context of IP assets, such as patents, copyrights, trademarks, and trade secrets, the application of many of such well-known models can present challenges. Our discussion will include a practical discussion of the applicability of the three primary economic valuation models to IP assets and how to IP licensing programs can be built on the valuations or used drive increased IP valuation.
