Lisa had been a stay-at-home mom for many years when, guiding her son through the college application process, she discovered a knack for motivating teens past the twin hazards of teenage procrastination and senioritis. At the same time, it occurred to her that students whose parents lack college experience are at a distinct disadvantage in the race for admission to four-year universities. Hoping to use her talents to "level the playing field," she started College Forward (then called Admission Control) at her kitchen table in 2003, as a publicly-supported charity. Lisa developed the early curriculum and served as College Forward's first classroom Coach, setting the model for the organization's fun-loving and nurturing teaching style. Now a thriving partnership that includes four local universities, College Forward serves over 250 low-income students at six area high schools and 50 students who have entered college. Participants have achieved remarkable levels of success; 100% have graduated from high school and earned admission to universities around the state and the nation. College Forward is one of Texas' newest AmeriCorps programs, and currently has a staff of 44 of the most talented and energetic people in the world. A member of several boards and professional organizations, Lisa recently received the Bank of America Foundation's "Local Hero" award for being "a catalyst for new vision, understanding and change in the Austin community."
